Almost every percussion massager listing leads with percussions per minute — 3200, 3400, 3600 — as if a bigger number meant a better device. It does not. Speed alone tells you how often the head taps you, not how deeply it travels or whether it keeps working once you press it into a muscle. Two devices with identical RPM figures can feel completely different in the hand. The specs that predict how a massage gun performs are amplitude, stall force and the quality of the motor mount, and only one of those three is usually printed on the front of the box.

Amplitude: how far the head actually travels

Amplitude, sometimes listed as stroke length, is the distance the head moves on each stroke. Budget devices sit around 6 to 8 millimeters, which produces a fast surface buzz — pleasant, but it works skin and superficial tissue. Serious devices run 10 to 16 millimeters, where the head genuinely displaces muscle rather than vibrating on top of it. If a listing does not publish amplitude at all, that is usually because the number is small. For general soreness on the quads, glutes and back, look for at least 10 millimeters; for smaller areas like forearms and calves, a shorter stroke with a softer head is often more comfortable.

Stall force: the number that separates real from decorative

Stall force is how much pressure you can apply before the motor bogs down and the head stops moving. A device with 20 pounds of stall force quits the moment you lean into a dense glute; a device with 40 to 60 pounds keeps its rhythm while you actually push. This is the specification most people discover they needed only after buying, because a gun that stalls feels underpowered in exactly the situations you bought it for. Mid-range devices should offer 30 pounds or more. Anything advertised without a stall force figure and with a very low price is likely to stall under real use.

Weight, noise and grip matter more than head count

Most kits ship with four to eight attachments and you will use two of them: the round foam or ball head for large muscles and the flat head for broader, gentler coverage. The bullet head is for very targeted work and is easy to overuse; the fork head should never straddle the spine itself. What you will notice every single session is weight and noise. Anything over about 2.5 pounds becomes tiring to hold overhead against your own shoulder, and a device above roughly 60 decibels is unpleasant to use while watching anything. Brushless motors are quieter and last longer than brushed alternatives. An adjustable arm or angled handle is genuinely useful if you plan to treat your own upper back.

Battery, warranty and the mini category

Look for a removable or high-capacity battery rated for at least four hours of use and a USB-C charge port so you are not tracking a proprietary brick. Warranty length is a decent proxy for build confidence: one year is standard, two years suggests the manufacturer expects the motor to survive. Mini massage guns deserve their own note — they are excellent gym-bag and travel tools, genuinely quiet, and appropriate for calves, forearms and traps, but their short amplitude and low stall force mean they will disappoint on glutes and hamstrings. Treat a mini as a second device, not the only one.

Technique: shorter than you expect

Percussive therapy works best in small doses. Float the head over the muscle at low or medium speed, let the weight of the device supply the pressure, and glide slowly rather than pressing hard into one spot. Sixty to ninety seconds per muscle group is plenty; two minutes is the upper limit. Never use it on bone, joints, the front of the neck, varicose veins, or a fresh injury with swelling. Before training, a brief pass at low speed can improve range of motion without dulling strength. After training, it makes stiff muscles feel workable again — which, for most people, is the entire point.
